Scientific framework and objectives

In the framework of the description of relatively underdescribed languages, it is not possible to concentrate on a particular aspect of the language without first having a fairly precise understanding of how the grammatical system as a whole functions, particularly given that the various subsystems that make up a language can interact in sometimes unexpected ways. We therefore consider that a “general” approach be imposed as a methodological necessity, at least in the early stages of work, and that any study wanting to limit itself prematurely to a particular aspect of the language risks producing incorrect descriptions. It is within this methodological approach that this project is anchored; it is an “open” project, in the sense that it offers a framework for research that doesn’t fit easily into one of the following projects, but one that also follows from the questions addressed by the group; research that aims to either describe under- or undescribed languages, using a combination of typological, genetic and areal approaches, or deepen our understanding of a particular typological problem by integrating into the study data from relatively underdescribed languages. The general objective is therefore to produce descriptions of under or undescribed languages, in the form of grammars and dictionaries, and to put, as far as possible, these descriptive works into their typological, genetic and/or areal context, with particular attention given to features specific to the languages to be described.
