Scientific framework and objectives

The principal objective is to build a typology that reflects the diversity of lexical and grammatical strategies used by the world’s languages to express path and its various components (source, waypoint and goal). For this, we develop methodological tools (questionnaires and video clips) for the elicitation of linguistic data, and theoretical tools that allow rapid access to the questions of space and movement in contemporary linguistics. We aim to set up an inventory of the morphosyntactic devices which take part in the expression of path in typologically and genetically varied languages, whether verb satellite systems (directionals, prefixes and particles), serial verbs or certain voices (applicatives or locatives) etc. We also envisage revising existing typologies (verb/satellite/equipollently framed) in construction typologies, highlighting the existence of typologically “hybrid” languages. Currently, this axis of research revolves around a workshop on "Semantic Typology" and the research program Deixis Dynamique 2015-2018 from the French Fédération de Typologie et Universaux Linguistiques.
