Scientific framework and objectives

This dissertation is the first grammatical description of South Eastern Huastec, a endangered Mayan language spoken by about 12,000 people in the north of the state of Veracruz in Mexico. The language has not been passed to the new generations for about 25-30 years. The first volume includes chapters on the phonology, the morphology, the syntax and the expression of space. The second volume contains stories, a detailed description of the documentation project, and the reproduction of revitalization materials. This descriptive work is based on 12 months of field work funded by a SOAS/HRELP documentation grant, an 8-month Mexican government scholarship and financial support from the DDL laboratory. It was carried out in co-tutelle between the Université Lumière Lyon 2 (France) and the University of Sydney (Australia), co-supervized by Colette Grinevald and William Foley. The thesis was started in October 2006 and defended in June 2012.
