Maia PONSONNET

Scientific framework and objectives

Maïa Ponsonnet joined the “Description, Typology and Variation” research team as a postdoc (funded for two years under the ASLAN labex, 2013-2015). Her research project consists of a comparison of the language of emotions in Dalabon, a severely endangered language of Northern Australia (Gunwinyguan, non-Pama-Nyungan), and Barunga kriol, the variety of Australian creole spoken by the descendants of Dalabon speakers. Dalabon numbers less than twelve speakers; the Australian Kriol numbers between 20.000 and 30.000 speakers. Dictionaries exist and publications on various linguistic aspects exist for both languages, but no grammars have yet been published. In her PhD thesis (2013), Maïa Ponsonnet documented the language of emotions in Dalabon. As a continuation, this research will describe emotional features in Kriol and compare them to Dalabon, with a view to a broader typology of linguistic emotional resources, within the Australian continent and beyond.
