Scientific framework and objectives

The ADYN- BONOBO project is dedicated to the description of vocal communication in the bonobo (Pan paniscus). It is conducted within a collaboration between DDL, the University of Saint-Étienne and the University of Québec at Chicoutimi, through a multidisciplinary comparative approach combining linguistics, ethology and acoustic phonetics. Its objectives are to achieve a better acoustic characterization of the calls of bonobos and a deeper understanding of the communication system as a whole (through the analysis of call sequences, their functional flexibility and their complexity).

Funded by ASLAN (responsible: Florence Levrero, St-Étienne), this project led to the organization of two workshops (in February and June 2017), and to the acoustic analysis of a corpus of more than 5000 vocalizations recorded in three European zoos (assistant: Xavier St-Gelais, UQAC). This collaboration has since been extended and led to the recruitment of Elisa Demuru for a postdoctoral fellowship as part of a broader study on vocal and gestural interactions in the bonobo.

It should be noted that the youth magazine Soucoupe Volante coordinated by La Rotonde (Mines Saint-Étienne), the Planetarium of Saint-Étienne and the Redpath Museum of McGill University published a popular science article dedicated to this project.
